SIMGENETICS PRODUCE LIVELY DEMAND AT HOUSTON INTERNATION SALE
The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s slate of Registered Cattle Sales began in strong fashion with the International Simmental/Simbrah Sale. Starting off the event on March 2nd, the Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association teamed up with the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation to present 34 lots of elite Fleckvieh, Simbrah and Purebred Simmental genetics. Auctioneer Doak Lambert was at the wheel and when he was all through and all done, the 34 lots had grossed $112,825 to average $3,318.
Superior Fleckvieh genetics were highly sought after as nine embryos out of the incomparable Bar 5 SA Lady Siska 409M topped the sale at $12,750. Consigned by Bar 5 Stock Farms, Markdale, Ontario, Canada, the embryos, three sired by Bar 5 SA Hold 407M & six by Bar 5 P SA Essential 413U, sold to Gibbons Farms, Stevensville, Ontario, Canada. Eight Fleckvieh embryos consigned by Dollars Diamond D of Russellville, AR, were also in demand as they went to Tres Portillos, McAllen,TX on a final bid of $6,000. Four of the embryos were a result of the Gibby’s Ultimate x DDD Encouragement mating and four were Bar 5 P SA Evaluation x DFM 310M. Little Creek Farm, Starkville, MS, brought a truly unique breeding piece, LFC Josie 673W, a homozygous polled, non-diluter Full Fleckvieh donor prospect. Sandhills Simmental claimed ownership of her with a final bid of $5,000, and will add her to their donor program at Richton, MS.
Demand for outstanding Simbrah genetics was also quite evident with PRR Apache 539W, a popular young herdsire prospect from Pine Ridge Ranch, Athens, TX, leading the way at $7,000. This thick-made, stylish, double-polled prospect will now head up the Simbrah breeding program for Ronnie Smith, Fort Worth, TX. Smith also selected LMC Flower Power, a phenomenal black, polled March yearling from La Muneca Cattle Company & Rising Sun Ranch, Linn, TX. He outlasted the competition to purchase her for $5,000. Smith struck again on Pine Ridge Ranch’s Lot 29A – a pick of the fall 2009 Embryo Transfer calf crop. This time he paid $4,500 to select the top individual from this set of 26 elite calves.
In the Purebred Simmental offering, a pick of the fall 2009 calf crop, some 80 calves, from the well-respected Pigeon Mountain Simmental Ranch in Lafayette, GA, sold for $4,800 going to Anderson Simmental, St Paul, NE, and Select Cattle Enterprises, Rome, GA. Lot 35, consisting of eleven embryos out of SS Goldilocks and KJS Ms Kenya, sold for a total of $3,250. Consigned by Anderson Simmental, three Goldilocks x Preferred Beef sold to La Morra Ranch, Floresville, TX, with the remainder going to D Bar Ranch, Cleburne, TX.
Sale Manager Roy Schwake, Schwake Cattle Services, La Rue, TX, commented that, “with spring approaching, good moisture conditions and stronger commercial cattle prices, demand for superior Simgenetics continues to grow”.

The winter storm that rolled through the South in early January brought rain, snow, ice, blustery winds and temperatures that dropped into the teens in Starkville MS. In spite of the conditions, a good crowd arrived at the Little Creek Farms Sale Facility on January 9 to appraise the offering of Full Fleckvieh Simmental & Red Angus cattle. Sale hosts Mikell & Mary Cheek Davis, along with guest consignors, assembled a select group of cattle for this fifth Magnolia Classic event.
